The big freeze could last a month after Britain fails – yet again

As snow paralyzed the transport network yesterday, forecasters warned that the Arctic blast could last a month.
Despite a week of warnings that it was time to freeze on its way, airports, roads and railways again failed miserably in front.
The passengers were furious that only three inches of snow led Heathrow Airport – the busiest in the third world – to cancel half of its flights.
Meanwhile, drivers across the country were stranded in snowstorms on motorways, with many complaining about the lack of gritters.
To make matters worse, Michael Lawrence of the Met Office said it would be very cold especially in the eastern parts for the next ten days and there was a chance of frost and snow for another 20 days after that.

No more snow is expected through Saturday, but the disruption on the roads will continue today as snow thawing frozen black ice to form deadly. The Bureau of Meteorology and the Highways Agency issued an Amber Alert – the second highest rating for cold weather – and the police warned motorists to essential travel only.
An RAC spokesman said: “It looks like we will get a cocktail of dangerous driving conditions.” He said that the organization deals with 70 per cent of breakdowns than normal today, while the AA said it received 1,500 calls per hour waiting.
